Chairman's
The FIRST program has impacted 2341's members by not only teaching valuable skills, but earning $82,000 in FIRST scholarships. The nature of FIRST is to train students for careers in STEM; members continually choose majors in Engineering, Advanced Mathematics, and Physics. 90% attend college, in which 85% are STEM fields. 66% graduate with STEM related degrees, as opposed to the less than 10% national average. Team members have gone on to the Naval Academy, NASA, and Engineering Schools.
2341 worked with the Citizen of Potawatomi Nation to be awarded the hosting of the next two years State FLL Championship which will benefit our community both economically and socially. Grants from the local Avedis Foundation help fund SOAR3, a STEM textbook partially written by three of our mentors and shared with 20+ school districts, several STEM camps and supplies for schools were made possible.
Our annual LE'GO Your LEGO® drive collects an donates building blocks, bring FIRST to children in hospitals. 2341 created fliers to insert in the LEGO kits about FIRST teams. Over 1100 children have benefited when using LEGOs for therapy along with learning the principles of FIRST. These donations have not only touched the patients but have allowed our students to gain a sense of community on a national level.
2341 puts the Core Values of FIRST... first! We show Gracious Professionalism by offering to share our practice field with any team. We offer to manufacture robot parts for teams with our water jet. We strengthen FIRST by running events such as Robot Rampage (off season), Brainstorm Night (just after kickoff) so we set the tone for working together, and Robot Showcase (last big practice)right before competition. Our mission is to grow FIRST in Oklahoma.
2341 plants the idea for starting FRC teams annually at STEM Day, Aerospace, the Governor’s STEM Summit and the Creativity World Forum. 2341 has lead Team 6464 through the rookie process this year and encouraged and supported others like 4993 Code Green during the same process. With our help, they won safety awards at Championship. Additionally, we demonstrate our robot to companies to encourage to fund FRC teams.
This year our Argosy FIRST grant will provide funds and training for 25 FIRST Lego League Jr. teams. 2341 has received grants to fund over 40 FLL teams, providing robot kits, registrations, t-shirts, promotional materials, and sometimes a work space to those teams. We have started 2 FTC teams seeking school board approval and found coaches and mentors for them. We are always seeking more ways to not only fund but assist new teams.
2341 is active in encouraging students to get involved. One of our mentors started a Jr. FLL team and 2 FTC teams. Another mentor coaches 3 FLL teams. We invite the FLL and FTC teams to our practices so they can learn programming, CAD, building and awards writing in preparation for FRC. They readily join us because of the relationship we have developed. Many 2341 members began FIRST with Jr. FLL or FLL. Members have graduated to continue coaching, mentoring, and participating in FIRST events.
2341 spent nearly 20,000 man-hours the past 5 years with FLL Jr., FLL and FTC teams. Including FRC, we have worked with 90+ teams by reading award submissions and providing robot building and programming advice. We hold workshops to teach classes in these skills. 2341 has built a robot with a team at Championship who only brought a Kit of Parts. We have done programming at competition for teams such as Code Green and RoboPack, along with one from Mexico. We offer help to all teams who need it!
Industrial sponsors are Enviro Systems Inc., Boeing, Tinker OC-ALC, ExxonMobil, Eaton, Mills Machining, Inc., and Singletrack Integration. Organizational sponsors are National Defense Education Program and HAAS Foundation. Our education sponsor is Gordon Cooper Technology Center which provides technical training, high school, and college credit through alliance agreements. These sponsors give both monetary assistance and serve as both mentors and volunteers to various FIRST events and our team.
Tinker OC-ALC ties our team to opportunities, funding, and mentorship. They include our team’s accomplishments in the Tinker newsletter. Employees attend the FLL Regional Qualifier we run as well as our STEM Day, Mother Daughter STEM Night, etc. Sponsors invite us to demonstrate our robot. We ask them to speak to students and, do program evaluations. Former team members have received internships from/been hired by our sponsors, Enviro Systems, Inc., and NASA(a key sponsor our first two years).
The fun of FIRST is building robots ‘til midnight, learning from people around the world, and being part of a team where everyone is valued. It inspires students to apply the knowledge they learn in school in meaningful ways. The competitions suit the abilities of different age groups with unique themes each year. While building a robot is the most known task in the competition, students can also compete for other awards relating to engineering knowledge, technology, teamwork, and outreach.
2341 is a family. We have gone from 6 members to as many as 79 members, with 6 engineering and 16 additional mentors. Our priority is to annually we spend 1000 hours educating others about FIRST. We can rely on our mentors well after practice is over. Because of this, former members frequently visit practices to get assistance that can only be attained here. We are politically and socially active and truly do enjoy spending time with other teams from around the world.
In 9 years we’ve planted the seed for a STEM Community, touched lives with community service and have blessed cancer patients, sick children, and our school’s foundation. 2341 has mentored/assisted 98 teams who have gone on to help other teams, growing FIRST. One person said to a mentor, “I’ve heard of the Sprockets. They are a really good team. They helped my brother’s team at competition. Thank you.” The true number of lives we’ve changed may be immeasurable, but the evidence is there.
