Our school serves a three-county area that houses 28 separate school districts. The per capita income of this area is about $22,000 per year, which places many families in poverty. Even though there are STEM camps offered in both our school and others in our town, many kids in the surrounding rural areas cannot attend them because of cost and transportation. We wanted to do something to give back to our community. Since our retiring former coach donated a trailer to our team, we saw an opportunity to create a STEM camp that could travel to those kids in rural and poverty areas. We call it "STEM on Wheels." To fund this camp, team members write grants, which mentors submitted, to Tinker Air Force Base and the AVEDIS Foundation. Members are writing and gathering a curriculum that ties healthy living to STEM and robotics, with a focus on healthy eating habits and exercise.
This past Monday, October 28, we received $15,000 from AVEDIS for our STEM on Wheels Camp
